In both the excerpts from K aren train der Zees novel A mystical heartache and in Gail Godwins short tommyrot A unbeloved Wo firearm, the plots centre on ideas of sexual union and family. Both of the female protagonists in the two stories pay back a contradict. In A Secret Sorrow Fayes conflict comes before the marriage. She is touch with misery and torment because she cannot have children and fears that this forget prevent her from marrying the man she loves. Both she and her beloved, Kai, desire marriage with children, and van der Zee suggests that altogether with these things will they truly be happy. Faye knows that her unfitness to have children is a fatal flaw that cuts her off from Kais love.
